Designed to provide indoor recreational opportunities and access to outdoor activities for the citizens of Tuscaloosa County, this multi-functional public facility sits in the middle of the wooded 80 acre Faucett Brothers Park. This wooded area also brought significant inspiration to the structural concept of the building.
Two indoor pools, exercise rooms, a walking track, and a gymnasium are the primary spaces in the facility. The central lobby intersects the building like an outdoor room with tree-like structural elements connecting the front entrance to multi-level patios in the back overlooking the trees. Glass overhead doors along one wall of the recreational pool open the pool to the exterior patio space in warmer months. The facility was shaped to fit the park topography in order to save the wooded park close to the building. This LEED Silver certified building takes advantage of day-lighting, controls storm water and returns it to the natural environment, and reflects sunlight with light-colored roofing.
